Appliances and treatment tools?
Aligners (clear aligners): A series of removable, nearly invisible trays that gradually move teeth. Invisalign is the best-known brand.
Archwire: The wire that connects the braces brackets and guides teeth into position.
Bracket: The small attachment bonded to each tooth that holds the archwire. Brackets can be metal or tooth-colored ceramic.
Elastics (rubber bands): Small bands that connect upper and lower braces to correct bite alignment.
Expander (palatal expander): An appliance that gently widens a narrow upper jaw to create room for teeth, tongue, and airway. RPE expanders are used for kids and teens; MSE/MARPE expanders can work for adults.
Retainer: A custom appliance worn after treatment to keep teeth from shifting back. We offer Hawley, Vivera, bonded, and Essix retainer options.
Self-ligating braces: Braces that use a built-in clip instead of elastic ties, which makes them easier to clean and often means fewer adjustment visits.
Diagnosis and technology
3D CBCT imaging: A cone-beam CT scan that shows teeth, roots, jaws, and airway in three dimensions. Smile Isle Orthodontics is the only orthodontic practice in the area to offer it.
Digital scanner: A camera-based tool that replaces messy putty impressions with a fast, comfortable digital model of your teeth.
Malocclusion: The clinical word for a “bad bite,” meaning any misalignment of the teeth or jaws, from crowding to overbites.
Bite and alignment problems
Crowding: Teeth that overlap or twist because there isn’t enough room. See our crowded teeth page.
Crossbite: When upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth, whether on one side, both sides, or in front.
Overbite / deep bite: When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth too much. Learn more on our overbite and deep bite page.
Open bite: When the front teeth don’t touch even when the back teeth are closed.
Spacing (diastema): Gaps between teeth, most noticeably between the front teeth.
Eruption: The process of a tooth emerging through the gums. Delayed eruption means a tooth is running behind schedule.
Treatment concepts
Airway-focused orthodontics: An approach that goes beyond aesthetics and considers how jaw development affects breathing and sleep. Smile Isle Orthodontics is the only airway-focused orthodontic office in the area.
Early (Phase 1) treatment: Growth-guided care for children whose jaws are still developing, which can prevent bigger problems later. See early treatment.
Two-phase treatment: A first phase that guides jaw growth in childhood, followed by a second phase (usually braces or aligners) once adult teeth arrive.
Invisalign First: Invisalign designed for growing kids as part of early treatment.
Wild Smiles: Fun, shaped brackets that make braces friendlier for kids.
Retention: The stage after active treatment where retainers protect your results for the long haul.
